It was reported recently from Comic-Con that James Gunn (SLiTHER) had a mysterious new project in the works called THE BELCOO EXPERIMENT. More mysterious – even to Gunn – is how this info got leaked since he wasn’t at the Con. Now that he’s been blasted with emails asking for the goods in regards to this project, Gunn has posted the following on his Myspace blog:
THE BELCOO EXPERIMENT is a script I wrote on spec. It’s an ultra-violent thriller with a lot of action. It has to do with a group of 83 American expatriates who work in a building in Sao Paulo, Brazil. At the beginning of what is at first a regular, boring day, walls close up around the building, trapping them inside. A voice emits over the speaker system, forcing them through a series of murderous moral decisions.
He goes on to say that most of the SLITHER team will be back: Upon finishing the script, I set it up with Gold Circle financing and Universal/Rogue distributing, with me directing, and Eric Newman and Paul Brooks, my great producers on SLiTHER, again producing. Some of my favorite crew from SLiTHER are also part of the team — composer Tyler Bates, editor John Axelrad, and production designer Andrew Neskoromny.
However, as much as I love this project, I’m not sure it’s the next thing I’m going to do, which is why I didn’t choose for it to come out at Comic-Con. Part of this is because casting is a challenge. The acting in the film is heavy, there is a large cast, and we need to find actors who meet the needs of myself, my producers, and Uni/Rogue. A lot of things need to fall into place for the casting to be perfect, and I don’t want to do the film until that’s the case. I think SLiTHER spoiled me in this way.
Sounds pretty intriguing. He did a more-than-serviceable job with the DAWN OF THE DEAD screenplay, and once again it seems he’s going the “people get trapped in a building and square off against each other” route. And unlike SLiTHER, it doesn’t appear to be a very humorous tale, unless the “murderous moral decisions” the unlucky people have to make involve tickle fights and pies in the face.
