Hayley Atwell hints at bigger plans for her Peggy Carter character and comments on Tomb Raider

British actress Hayley Atwell dropped some hints about the future (past?) of Peggy Carter, her secret agent character from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER in a recent interview with The Age and it seems like it may be more than we thought. Atwell has been on again/off again with her potential appearance in the sequel, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, and she does her best to keep the plans for her character under wraps, but manages to let loose a few telling tidbits, including a confirmation that she’s “involved” with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER:

“They’re so tight, the Marvel family, and private. I can say that I am involved in some way in the second one. Just know that it’s not me being cryptic, it’s Marvel. They can just as easily kill me off if I threaten to tell the story before it’s time. They’re keeping it all under wraps.”

Atwell goes on to bring up a doozy of a cryptic response, which reads very much like Peggy Carter getting her own venue of sorts, be it in a short film or something of the like. She was mum on details, obviously, but mentions Comic Con and alludes to something being finished in England that was great fun. Dissect away:

“There’s been an online campaign for Peggy to be featured. People really liked her. So Marvel have made sure that as part of Comicon there will be a little kind of snapshot as to what Peggy’s actually really capable of, which was finished here and which was great fun. Hopefully, it will lead to other things.”

She goes on to explain what she’d like to see with a Peggy Carter spin-off, saying:

“I’d revisit Peggy again. She’s pretty uptight. I’d like to, if I get a spin-off, definitely add a bit of humour in there. She’s very British. Very uptight. Let’s hope if she gets a spin-off it’s modern day, so she can relax a little bit, let go of the uniform.”

The actress also addressed the recent Twitter campaign to cast her as the new Lara Croft/Tomb Raider, to which she plays slightly coy in being involved with, but seems very excited about the prospects:

“There’s also some kind of online campaign for me to do Tomb Raider Reborn, which I know has just come out as a computer game. MGM have the rights to make it into a film, which would be fantastic to do because I’d get to spend a year of my life training hard and pick up all sorts of fantastic fun skills.”

As far as I’m concerned, Atwell has my vote for Tomb Raider and if she’s able to continue the character of Peggy Carter then all the better. She fit that role to a tee and with so many “classic” Cap stories floating around, there’s plenty of room to give her a platform. In truth, though, I’d just like to see more of Atwell. But, with less clothing.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is slated for April 4, 2014.
