Hollywood playing Chinese Firedrill with Y: The Last Man. Louis Leterrier back on again!

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

Alright so it’s been about a quarter of a year since the last discussion was made between a director (D.J. Caruso, Louis Leterrier) and New Line Cinema regarding the status of male horror (or haven) Y: THE LAST MAN. Once again we are faced with another directorial switch between the two contenders.

Here’s a little back story for ya if you’re new to this: D.J. Caruso (DISTURBIA) was slated to film the project under New Line Cinema’s intention to make it a sellable feature. Caruso had intentions of his own regarding the film as he wanted it to stick closer to the graphic novel (from which it was based off of) and since then has been fighting for the director’s chair with Leterrier. Leterrier became interested during his shoot of CLASH OF THE TITANS and a few months later it switched over to Caruso. The story of the last man on earth just can’t seem to find the right man to direct.

Now Screenrant reports that Leterrier is once again “in talks” with New Line Cinema to direct the film. “DJ Caruso was supposed to do it with Shia Labeouf,” said Leterrier  “and that sort of went on and was over, so I went in and said, ‘Please, please let me have it!’”

Leterrier explains about the possibility of turning Y: THE LAST MAN into a TV series. “It could play as a movie, but it would be very interesting as a TV show… [It wouldn’t work as] one large film, no. I’d love to do it as a TV show or a three-part series…. I like the idea of a TV show. You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don’t need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies. Frankly, with HBO and Showtime  and cable shows, the DVD box sets and all, you can have a product that doesn’t make you feel like as soon as it’s projected, it’s thrown away. It’s really a piece of art.”

So is this good news regarding the development of the flick? Unfortunately, no. Because Leterrier is still “in talks” and papers have been signed, it’s hard to say what will become of Y. Letterier admits that the project is currently “stuck” in development and that it will take some time to sort out. We’ll bring you more tidbits as they head our way. In the meantime check out the synopsis of the first film!

On July 17, 2002, something (referred to as a plague) simultaneously kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome — including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm. The only exceptions appear to be Yorick Brown, a young amateur escape artist, and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand.

Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse, and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men, their survivor guilt, and the knowledge that – barring a rapid, major scientific breakthrough or other extraordinary happening – humanity is doomed to extinction. Brian K. Vaughan crafts the new society that emerges from this chaos, from the conversion of the Washington Monument into a monument to the dead men, to the genesis of the fanatical ultra-feminist Daughters of the Amazon, who believe that Mother Earth cleansed itself of the “aberration” of the Y chromosome, to male impersonators becoming valued romantically and professionally.

C’mon guys, this ain’t all that bad!
