Guillermo del Toro's new film THE SHAPE OF WATER begins production today in Toronto. Described as an "other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963," the film sounds like a true meld between his English and Spanish work.

He has surrounded himself with a talented cast and crew, including costume designer Luis Sequeira (The Strain), DP Dan Laustsen – (CRIMSON PEAK), visual effects supervisor Dennis Berardi (CRIMSON PEAK, FIGHT CLUB), editor Sidney Wolinsky (The Strain), and production designer Paul Austerberry (POMPEII).

Says del Toro:

I started working on THE SHAPE OF WATER right around the time we moved to Toronto for PACIFIC RIM.  Working with Fox Searchlight and being supported by this beautiful group of actors and artists, I feel extremely blessed and brave.

THE SHAPE OF WATER stars Sally Hawkins (BLUE JASMINE), Michael Shannon (MIDNIGHT SPECIAL), Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR), Doug Jones (PAN'S LABYRINTH), Michael Stuhlbarg (A SERIOUS MAN), and Octavia Spencer (THE HELP).

Del Toro is directing from a script he co-wrote with Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones).
