Go behind the scenes of the Brain That Wouldn’t Die remake

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

In 1962, director Joseph Green brought the world THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE, a sci-fi horror movie that not only ranks among the best “head on a table” movies ever made, but is also so worthy of mockery that it was at the center of a great episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

More than fifty years after the original film’s release, director Derek Carl and screenwriter Hank Huffman have embarked on making a satirical remake of THE BRAIN THE WOULDN’T DIE, a new take on the story Green crafted with Rex Carlton. That story follows

the misadventures of Dr. Bill Cortner, a brilliant but unorthodox surgeon, who revives the head of his recently decapitated fiancee, Jan Compton, in hopes that he can find her a new body.

Knowing full well that he will have to murder an innocent woman to do so, Bill’s intentions are revealed to be less than noble, especially after it becomes clear that he seeks not only a viable body, but a “perfect body” – a quest that takes him through the seedier parts of the city, from smoky cabarets to sleazy swimsuit competitions.

All the while, Jan, determined to bring an end to her suffering, uses her newly acquired psychic abilities (because why not) to communicate with another of Bill’s botched experiments. Together, they plot their revenge…

Produced by Molly Preston, the remake was partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $70,000. It stars Rachael Perrell Fosket, Patrick Green, Jason Reynolds, Mia Allen, and Robert Blanche.

Filming on the new THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE wrapped a few days ago, but before cameras stopped rolling the Portland, Oregon set was visited by a news crew from KPTV. Their behind-the-scenes report can be seen below.

It might be a while before we’ll be able to watch Derek Carl’s THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE, the estimated delivery date for Kickstarter perks is June 2018, but this appears to be a project worth keeping an eye on as it moves into post-production and toward release.
