Suspiria remake still alive with new director?

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Ah, the SUSPIRIA remake. The project that just won’t die. You’ll recall that, years ago, director David Gordon Green attempted to get this project off the ground – and came very close – before having to shut it down, mostly due to budgetary issues. Since then there’s been nothing much to talk about in regards to the film (Green himself said he didn’t think it would ever happen) but now there’s evidently new blood coursing through its veins.

Speaking with Crave Online, Green claims SUSPIRIA is currently close to making a comeback:

I’m actually hopeful that it’s happening with a great Italian director that I had breakfast with last week.”

Naturally, Green doesn’t specify who he’s talking about, but it’s an intriguing hint all the same. Is it a young Italian director, or a vet? Could it be Dario Argento himself?! (That would be weird, huh?)

Green also spoke enthusiastically about the vision he had for the proposed remake:

I wrote it with my sound designer. I love Argento’s film and we wrote a very faithful, extremely elegant opera, basically of [Suspiria]. I don’t mean musical opera, but it would be incredibly heightened music, and heightened and very operatic and elegant sets. Isabelle Huppert was going to be in it, [and] Janet McTeer. We had an amazing cast of elegance and prestige that we were engineering for it.”

While I’m of the mindset a remake of SUSPIRIA is highly unnecessary, it should still be interesting to see if this ever pans out. Furthermore, if it does move forward, how will it effect the proposed SUSPIRIA TV show that was announced back in April? Stay tuned.
