The Newcomers are back: Alien Nation set for remake by Fox

One of the great buddy cop pictures of the late 80s is getting the remake/reboot treatment. The Tracking Board is reporting that 20th Century Fox is aiming to get ALIEN NATION off the ground, with Mark Roybal (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) and Ryan Jones producing. The duo has commenced meeting with writers.

The original 1988 film, starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin, was an…

action-packed blend of science fiction and police drama that finds Los Angeles the new home of 300,000 humanoid extraterrestrial. When a gang of these Newcomers kills a police detective’s (Caan) partner, he sets out to solve the crime with his new partner (Patinkin) – the L.A.P.D.’s first Newcomer detective. But the unlikely pair soon uncover a far more dangerous threat to society.

The movie was a mild success when it came out and was almost immediately turned into a short-lived television series, which in turn spawned a handful of made-for-TV movies. A pilot at Syfy attempted liftoff in 2009 but never went anywhere. Let’s see if they’re able to successfully revitalize the name brand this time.
