Last week Ammon was kind enough to tell us about WOMEN IN CHAINS. He pointed out that CHAINS sounds like a throwback to the wonderful exploitation flicks of the 70s and 80s.
Well one of those classics flicks happens to be I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE. Well… no way around it… it’s getting remade.
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE came out in 1978 and was pegged as pretty controversial, with movie critic head honchos Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel blasting the flick, which was music to the director’s ears.
That joyful director was Meir Zarchi, who not only directed the original, but wrote and produced it as well. Well Mr. Zarchi just sold the remake rights to CineTel Films. It’s really interesting to note that even though most of CineTel’s slate is straight-to-DVD, they’re pegging I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE for a theatrical release.
There’s NO WAY to water this one down to a PG-13 rating… so does this mean CineTel will make this remake all out, a hard R looking to score big at the box office? That’s a big risk in today’s cinema (although THE STRANGERS held it’s own). It’s a big risk I absolutely love! I’d definately support this bad boy if it looks good enough.
Zarchi is actually hoping this remake is more controversial than his film. CineTel prexy CEO and producer Paul Hertzberg also hopes so, stating how compared to today’s violent flicks, the original I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE seems not as bad, so he’s looking for a writer who can up the shock factor on the story.
That sounds welcoming! I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE was about a woman who’s abducted, brutally attacked and raped and then left for dead. She survives, hunts her attackers and dispatches them in graphic ways. A badass heroine is a big thing in today’s movies, so they might actually have something here.
If a female wants to exploit herself… who am I to stop her?
