Idris Elba says a Luther feature-film is very close to happening

Idris Elba, Luther, movie

Last year, Idris Elba returned as DCI John Luther for the fifth installment of Luther, BBC's excellent detective drama created and written by Neil Cross. Much like BBC's Sherlock, fans have never been sure if and when another season of the series would drop, but both Elba and Cross seem keen to keep the torch burning and bring the character back when they can.

While speaking with Deadline during a press-junket for his comedy series In the Long Run, Idris Elba teased that although there are no "formal plans" for another season of Luther, a feature-film based on the series is looking increasingly likely.

I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther.

This isn't the first time that Idris Elba has spoken of the possibility of a Luther movie, as he said that Neil Cross was working away on the script back in 2018. "We are really advancing on getting a movie version [of the show] up on the screen," Elba said. "Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up. Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic [neo-noir] films of the 90s like SEVEN and ALONG CAME A SPIDER and I think what we would like to do is use that blueprint to create LUTHER the film." Elba added that the big-screen version of Luther will "be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well." As a big fan of the series, I'd love to see Luther on the big-screen, but as a big fan of the series, I know better than to get my hopes up.

Idris Elba will next be seen in THE SUICIDE SQUAD which is slated to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
