It would seem like Hollywood might be filled with qualified directors itching to take on a big-budget action flick with an A-list actor, but diminutive superstar Tom Cruise is obviously thinking outside the box for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4.
Cruise has apparently figured that since Brad Bird already made the greatest superhero movie yet (animated or otherwise) with THE INCREDIBLES, he might be able to do the same for the action-espionage genre. Heat Vision says Cruise, producer JJ Abrams and Paramount are pursuing Bird to round up Ethan Hunt and the IMF team for a new mission, and the director’s live-action debut.
Bird is on a wishlist that also includes ZOMBIELAND’s Ruben Fleischer and SHAUN OF THE DEAD’s Edgar Wright. The studio is hoping to start shooting this summer, since the movie already has a release date slotted for Memorial Day Weekend in 2011.
Bird (who also directed instant classics RATATOUILLE and THE IRON GIANT) has been trying to get going on his own live-action (and mighty expensive) project 1906, which revolves around that year’s great San Francisco earthquake.
