Insidious: Out of the Further is now available to watch digitally, and to celebrate the release, we’re excited to share an exclusive clip that takes horror fans behind the scenes of one of the sixth movie’s most inventive sequences: the terrifying pillow fort scene. In the clip above, director Jacob Chase offers a look at how the sequence was created, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the filmmaking that went into turning something as innocent as a pillow fort into a nightmarish journey through The Further.
Before directing Insidious: Out of the Further, Chase made his feature debut with the supernatural horror movie Come Play. He also has experience building haunted houses with friends, and that background clearly informed the way he approached the pillow fort sequence, which puts the audience inside a confined, creepy environment. That was one of the sequences that stood out to JoBlo’s Ryan Cultrera in his review of the movie.
The pillow fort is one of Insidious: Out of the Further’s best scares
In his Insidious: Out of the Further review, Ryan praised the pillow fort sequence as one of the film’s most memorable moments.
“There is a moment where Gemma crawls into a pillow fort, and it becomes a haunted house sequence experienced through her point of view.”
While the movie retains many of the familiar elements audiences expect from Insidious, it also introduces a major new rule to the mythology: Gemma (played by Amelia Eve) can travel into The Further and bring spirits back with her. That ability begins breaking down the barrier between the supernatural realm and our world.
What is Insidious: Out of the Further about?
Insidious: Out of the Further follows Gemma, a young mother who moves into the house where she grew up while trying to create the home she never had for her daughter, Maya. Gemma soon discovers that she can enter The Further, the supernatural realm inhabited by the dead and demonic entities of the Insidious universe. But she has an ability that makes her different from those who have entered The Further before: she can bring things back with her. That makes Gemma extremely valuable to the sinister Cyrus Lam, a cult leader-like figure who has established himself in The Further. Played by Sam Spruell, Cyrus wants to use Gemma’s ability to bring the spirits trapped in The Further into the real world.
The movie also brings back franchise favorite Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier, while Nope star Brandon Perea joins Eve as one of the film’s key new characters. The cast also includes Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Island Austin, and Laura Gordon.
Insidious: Out of the Further review
Ryan Cultrera gave Insidious: Out of the Further a 7/10 and called it “another solid entry” in the franchise. While his review found some issues with the movie’s pacing and its tendency to over-explain its new supernatural rules, he praised the cast, inventive horror sequences, and willingness to expand the Insidious mythology.
Ryan ultimately found that the movie’s strengths outweighed its weaknesses, writing that it brings “great scares and inventive sequences” to the franchise. He also singled out Chase’s direction, Lin Shaye’s return as Elise, Eve’s performance as Gemma, and Spruell’s creepy turn as Cyrus as highlights.
