Aleshea Harris’ latest feature is refreshing. The Gossip Girl star’s directorial debut is a bold and fascinating tale of revenge. Harris’ script is damn impressive. Dealing with loss and violence beautifully. The feature, Is God Is, revolves around two sisters played by Kara Young and Mallori Johnson. Both suffered a tragic event in their youth, one that left them scarred. Both figuratively and literally. The two soon find themselves on a mission of vengeance. And the grindhouse vibe truly resonated with this viewer.

The feature offers an impressive supporting cast, including Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, Mykelti Washington, and Janelle Monae. It’s a wild ride that goes to unexpected places, and sometimes very unsettling ones. Considering this is Aleshea Harris’ first written and directed feature, I’m really excited to see what kind of story she takes on next.

A couple of weeks back, I sat down with Kara Young and Mallori Johnson. It was nice discussing such a project. What definitely left an impression on the two is their costars. It’s a great group of talent on screen. As well, they talked about taking on such intense characters and finding the familial bond. I’m hoping this cool flick will find an audience. It’s refreshing to see something this ambitious and inspired. And this badass story is well worth the experience.

Is God Is opens this Friday at a theatre near you.
