Is there potential for an Avengers and X-Men crossover movie in the future?

Getting two studios to coexist on a movie production is not easy. Just look how long it took New Line and MGM to get their shit straight on THE HOBBIT. But, with the tons of money to be made on Marvel films these days, the bottom line may be something executives can get on the same page about.

Now, this is by no means a confirmation or even something on the horizon, but X-MEN producer Lauren Shuler Donner was asked about the potential for the mutant characters currently being filmed for 20th Century Fox someday meeting the Disney cinematic Marvel characters featured in THE AVENGERS. Her answer was generic, but not negative:

“I would love it. I would love it. I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige, because Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written, yeah, absolutely.”

Granted, Donner is a producer and not one of those who would have the final say on whether a deal like this could happen, but it is definitely a tiny bit of hope. The recent Marvel event known as AVENGERS VS X-MEN generated a lot of buzz for the two super-teams. While it may be hard to use that exact storyline (no studio would risk making any heroes into villains for an event like that, even though it would be cool), there is a lot of potential for the teams to work together to battle a bigger foe.

The negative to that would be the reality that Marvel is already planning to add more heroes to THE AVENGERS sequel. if this crossover were to happen, Joss Whedon and Matthew Vaughn would have to find some way to make a film that doesn’t last four hours, still manages to feature some sort of plot, and give enough screen time to each actor to warrant paying them millions of dollars.

We likely will not see an AVENGERS/X-MEN mega-movie, but it would certainly be pretty cool if we did.
