James Gunn says The Suicide Squad had 100 percent zero studio interference

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

David Ayer has more than hinted that 2016's SUICIDE SQUAD had its fair share of studio interference which led to what some think is a muddled mess of a film.  Ayer isn't returning to direct the sequel, THE SUICIDE SQUAD, that job was handed to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director, James Gunn. So has Gunn experienced the same studio interference that Ayer suffered through? According to him, not at all.

A fan on Twitter asked if THE SUICIDE SQUAD was 100% Gunn without any meddling from the studio and Gunn's response should make fans of the upcoming sequel very happy. Check out his answer below:

So why no studio meddling on this project? I can only speculate that Warner Bros. has either learned from past mistakes or they just really trust James Gunn and his vision. He directed two very successful GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY films so he has no problem handling a big budget endeavor and on those projects, he was pretty much left to his own devices as well. THE SUICIDE SQUAD is likely to be a better movie without too many cooks in the kitchen.

The studio interference question, in regards to THE SUICIDE SQUAD, does make sense, however. The first film was infamously plagued with studio edits and interventions that made the finished film a poor imitation of the film he intended to make, according to David Ayer. This is why he has supported the #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign because he has teased several differences with his version of the movie that he believes could easily be cut together to make the film more in line with his vision. The release of Zack Snyder's JUSTICE LEAGUE on HBO Max next year has only fueled fans and Ayer to get his proper cut of SUICIDE SQUAD released.

THE. SUICIDE SQUAD is set for release next year and the film was one of the lucky ones to wrap production right before the COVID-19 pandemic made Hollywood go dark Gunn will be bringing back some familiar faces like Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney while new additions include Idris Elba, John Cena, David Dastmalchian, Taika Waititi, Pete Davidson, Peter Capaldi, Nathan Fillion and more.
