Joe Dante’s horror comedy Burying the Ex gets an international trailer

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Joe Dante has a filmography that stands on it’s own as one of the best of the 1980s. He helmed THE HOWLING, GREMLINS, INNERSPACE, EXPLORERS, THE ‘BURBS, and more. But, since 1998’s SMALL SOLDIERS, Dante has only directed one theatrical release, the bomb LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION. Now, his latest film BURYING THE EX is getting a release and we have the first trailer.

While BURYING THE EX has a pretty good cast in Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, and Alexandra Daddario, this does not look like a very good movie. If anything, BURYING THE EX looks like the same kind of direct to On Demand crap Dante has been relegated to for the past decade.

Max is dating the overbearing Evelyn who he’s afraid to break up with. When she’s killed in a freak accident, he falls in love with Olivia, with whom he is much better suited. However Evelyn rises from the grave.

A movie about a guy whose girlfriend comes back from the dead and creates havoc in his life has become something of a cliche with several films using the exact same plot in recent years. Not to mention the fact that this international trailer spills almost the entire plot in just over two minutes. It boggles the mind that a filmmaker who was as highly regarded as Steven Spielberg in the 1980s has been reduced to making movies like this.

BURYING THE EX debuted at the Venice Film Festival last year and currently has no domestic release date. I would expect that, when it does, it will be direct to VOD.
