John Wick director Chad Stahelski sets expectations for the film’s sequel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

When JOHN WICK opened in theaters last year, many heralded it as the triumphant return of Keanu Reeves to leading man roles. With a budget of just $20 million, the film has gone on to gross over $70 million worldwide with several major territories to come. First time directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are now being touted as potential helmers for COWBOY NINJA VIKING starring Chris Pratt, but that doesn’t mean they are not planning on a sequel to their debut.

In an interview with Movies.com, director Chad Stahelski outlined what they would anticipate from JOHN WICK 2 when it actually happens.

“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”

While not the most original movie, JOHN WICK was nonetheless very entertaining in a way action movies rarely are these days. It definitely lived up to the buzz it garnered and I can easily say I am not alone in wanting to see the further adventures of the titular character. Keanu Reeves has shown he still has what it takes for these types of roles and I hope he and his buddies have just as much fun making another one.

JOHN WICK is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
