Caine: Donnie Yen’s John Wick spin-off gets a sharp and stylish teaser as the film rolls into production

One of the most successful action franchises in years, John Wick, continues to expand with Caine, an action-packed spin-off revolving around Donnie Yen’s character from John Wick: Chapter 4. Despite Ballerina underperforming somewhat (it made $52 million domestically but fared better overseas, with $82 million, for a $140 million global haul), Lionsgate is determined to make the John Wick Universe work outside the core series with another character-focused bloodbath. Today, the studio released a brief teaser for Caine, featuring the character’s signature sword against a crimson backdrop.

In addition to reprising his role as the assassin Caine, Yen is directing the spin-off for Lionsgate. Rina Sawayama will also reprise her role as Shimazu Akira from the fourth installment.

The spin-off will take place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, with Caine now freed from his obligations to The High Table. Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II) wrote the script alongside Michael McGrale (The Rip).

Yen on his Caine Spin-off

In a statement, Yen said, “What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero.”

He continued, “This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added, “It became clear after John Wick: Chapter 4 that fans were particularly intrigued by Caine, which made his story the most natural next chapter of the franchise. It’s truly exciting to be embarking on a strategic partnership with Donnie—he has the vision to bring to life this extension of the John Wick universe in a way that’s authentic to his own signature style, flair, and expertise as a filmmaker.”

The Wick-Verse Continues

Although John Wick: Chapter 4 seemingly brought the story of the legendary assassin to an end, Lionsgate has announced plans for John Wick: Chapter 5, an animated prequel, and even a new single-player AAA video game. So expect more drama from the High Table coming soon!

Are you excited about Caine getting his own movie? I’ve been a Yen fan for decades, and love the idea of him getting behind the camera for the latest John Wick spin-off. Caine is mysterious, badass, and eerily calm for someone navigating a world of assassins and cutthroats. Of all the characters introduced in the John Wick franchise, I’m glad it’s Caine who’s branching out. Let’s go!
