While her sister Rooney has been grabbing the spotlight since her starring role in David Fincher‘s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGOON TATTOO, Kate Mara has been quietly building up quite the resume. Appearing in the first season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY as well as an excellent turn in David Fincher‘s HOUSE OF CARDS with Kevin Spacey, Kate has proven she has the chops to play with the big boys. She is just waiting for a chance to make an impact in a big movie and become a star. While she has appeared in big films in the past (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, SHOOTER), TRANSCENDENCE is a chance for a breakout.

TRANSCENDENCE is the directorial debut of Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan‘s longtime cinematographer. Already touting a cast that features Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, and Rebecca Hall, TRANSCENDENCE looks to keep adding to the roster of talent.

The plot is not quite pinned down yet, but here is a rumored synopsis for the film:

Three scientists — Max and the husband and wife team, Will (Depp) and Evelyn — have been developing a programming code for the world’s first fully self-aware computer. A group of anti-technology terrorists assassinate Will, Evelyn uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Although she at first finds the experiment seems to have gone wrong, before too long Evelyn finds Will responding in computer form. She goes on to connect Will to the Internet so he can help make further scientific breakthroughs. Will asks Evelyn to connect a microphone and a camera up to the computer so he can see and speak to her as well. When the anti-technology organization finds out, they try to steal the supercomputer and destroy it, but Will no longer needs the computer to survive.

Mara’s role is unknown at this point, but could she potentially be taking the role of Depp’s wife? That would certainly be a huge career boost for the actress but I have a feeling this film will have a diverse cast, so we will have to wait to find out. With TRANSCENDENCE due for release next year, I would expect more casting to be announced soon.

TRANSCENDENCE will hit theaters on April 25, 2014.
