Kathleen Kennedy says that we may see more of Saw Gerrera in future projects

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

As of today, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY has been playing in theaters for close to 2 weeks and has raked in over $600 million worldwide. The film introduced a legion of new characters to the Star Wars universe and proved that Lucasfilm would be able to make these spinoffs work. ROGUE ONE didn't get there without having to jump a few hurdles however, and the various reshoots and restructuring meant that the paths of certain characters were altered, including Forest Whitaker's Saw Gerrera.

While speaking with Empire, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confesses that they "originally thought we were going to develop Saw into something much larger, but we couldn’t accommodate it. So he is not in the movie as much as we would like to have him in the movie, which creates the opportunity to explore his character even further in our future development." As this interview was given before it was announced that Forest Whitaker would be reprising his role on Star Wars Rebels for a two-part episode, it's possible that this was the "future development" Kennedy was speaking of, but with the Star Wars spinoff movies free to explore any period of Star Wars history, it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that we may see Saw Gerrera pop up in one of those.

As for Forest Whitaker, he certainly sounds game for whatever Lucasfilm has planned for Saw Gerrera.

I’m curious about what else they’re about to do. Because they seem to really like the character, which is great!

Although I'm quite the fan of Whitaker, I'm aware that his take on Saw Gerrera in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY hasn't exactly been met with universal praise, still, the character is intriguing enough that I'd be perfectly fine seeing him pop up again beyond Star Wars Rebels, in whatever form that may take.

What do you folks think? Are you up to seeing more of Saw Gerrera or would you be glad to hear the last of Forest Whitaker's heavy breathing?
