Kevin Smith says his Green Hornet animated series is still in development

Back in July, it was announced that View Askewniverse mastermind Kevin Smith was joining forces with producer Wildbrain to develop a new animated series centered around the superhero antics of The Green Hornet. Since that time, the buzz around the project has become something akin to a silent drone. However, thanks to a recent interview conducted by Comicbook.com, we have an update on how the show is coming along.

"Green Hornet, I just pitched three times last week and then once before I got on the plane, and then pitch again when I get home. It looks like it's going to have a home pretty damn soon," Smith recently told the outlet while attending the opening of his latest Mooby's pop-up. "It looks like it's going, it looks like somebody's going to grab it, which is nice. The art dec is f*cking gorgeous. Honestly, like, f*ck the story and f*ck the pitch. If you just sent somebody the art dec and they just looked at these 12 pictures, you'd be like, you know whether or not you want to make that show"

As their discussion continued, Smith continued to tease some very exciting elements about his update to the pulp comic hero including how the show will feature a banging soundtrack comprised of modern music.

"But it's so gorgeous, and it's kid-friendly. Like it's a family show. So it's for like the 8-12 or family group or something like that. And it's very inspired by Into the Spider-Verse, very much so," Smith added. "Deeply. And in fact, like we're not doing a score, we're doing needle drop in terms of soundtrack. So it's not going to be like, 'Oh, there's that Green Hornet score.' We're going to grab music, current music, kind of it give it a certain hipness to it. But also, it's very … yeah, it takes a lot of cues from Into the Spider-Verse. And the look of it is not … As you look at it, you'd be like, 'Oh, I can see it there too.' Yeah. I love that movie."

Flying onto the superhero scene before Superman, The Green Hornet was one of radio's most inspired adventure programs. In time, Universal transformed the character's exploits into a series of 1940s movie serials. In 1966, 20th Century Fox let Green Hornet take flight as a television series, with Bruce Lee starring as the justice seeker's trusty sidekick Kato. The story of The Green Hornet finds The Daily Sentinel owner/publisher Britt Reid fighting crime while looking to dismantle a vast criminal underworld. Together with his partner Kato, Green Hornet uses his nose for news, an assortment of sweet weapons, and a car that would make James Bond jealous, named Black Beauty, to bring villains to their knees.

For his upcoming animation project, Smith and WildBrain are developing the new animated series to target a family audience. As previously reported, the series will be set in contemporary times, following the adventures of a re-imagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato – as they partner to battle crime in Century City.
