Shrek 5.0

Universal and DreamWorks has opened the book on the first Shrek 5 trailer for all to see. The film is set for a June 30th, 2027 release date. Everybody seems to be falling right back into character quite well and Eddie Murphy even gets to have a great throwback to 48 Hrs. at the end of this trailer.

Once Upon a time…

Comedy legends Mike Myers, Oscar nominee Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz return to their signature roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Emmy winning superstar Zendaya (The OdysseyDune franchise) joins the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter Felicia, along with Marcello Hernandez (Saturday Night LiveHappy Gilmore 2) and Skyler Gisondo (SupermanBooksmart) as Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle.

Shrek 5 is directed by acclaimed filmmakers and Shrek franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn. Vernon was a member of the directing team on the Academy Award nominated Shrek 2 as well as on DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Monsters vs. Aliens. Vernon has also provided the voice of Shrek fan-favorite Gingerbread Man, aka “Gingy,” across all titles in the Shrek Universe. Dohrn worked on the second and third Shrek films as a writer and artist and as Head of Story on the fourth film. Dohrn also voiced the character of Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After. Dohrn served as co-director on the first Trolls film and directed Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together.

Eddie Murphy on the Donkey spin-off

In addition to Shrek 5, Eddie Murphy revealed that a Donkey spinoff movie is also in the works. “We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he said. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].“

The Shrek franchise

The last official Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, came out way back in 2010 and proved to be the lowest-grossing entry into the saga, still earning a muscular $238 million domestically and another $500 million overseas. However, two Puss in Boots spin-offs have since come out, keeping the franchise alive. The last one, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, was a surprise hit in 2022, with it making $186 million domestically, despite movies, on the whole, not doing well that holiday season. It also made another $295 million internationally, so there’s still an appetite for the franchise.
