Lionsgate in talks to pick up Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen

A new HELLBOY movie is in the works, and instead of the HELLBOY III that Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman have long wanted to make finally going into production the comic book adaptation franchise is getting a reboot called HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN

Although I had been rooting for Del Toro to be able to make his third HELLBOY film and complete his trilogy, I can’t complain too much about the reboot because Neil Marshall is at the helm and I’m always on board to watch anything Marshall makes. Especially, as it turns out, when what he’s making involves a heroic demon.

David Harbour of Stranger Things is signed on to be the new Hellboy, and it sounds like the “Blood Queen” of the title is going to make a bloody mess, because the film is already expected to receive an R rating.

We’ve heard the announcement of HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN and we’ve heard those involve discuss their intentions, but all this time the project hasn’t had a distributor attached to release it once it’s complete. That looks to be changing now, as Lionsgate is in “final negotiations” to pick up the distribution rights.

Sony released Del Toro’s first HELLBOY film in 2004, and Universal stepped in to release the sequel HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY in 2008. The films centered on

a demon raised by a kind, and human, professor, working to fight supernatural evildoers for an organization called Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Produced by Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Mike Richardson, HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN is expected to start filming this fall.
