Lovecraft Country won’t be back for a second season

Lovecraft Country, HBO, TV, cancelled

If you were hoping for a second season of Lovecraft Country, I've got bad news for you. According to Deadline, HBO has announced that the series will not be receiving a second installment. "We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country," HBO said in a statement. "We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey."

Based on the novel by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country followed "Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback." I haven't had time to check out the series for myself yet (there's too damn much to watch), but despite its success, a second season wasn't always a guarantee. That's because Matt Ruff's novel served as the basis of the first season, and any subsequent season would need to be entirely crafted by showrunner Misha Green. For a while, HBO and Green did entertain the idea of a second season, with HBO's Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys saying earlier this year that Green was working with a team of writers to come up with a take for a new season.

She had a book to go on in the first season, she and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is Mischa, so we’re giving them the time to work.

At the end of the day, it was decided not to move forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. The cast of the series have seen their stars rise considerably, especially Jonathan Majors, who will be playing Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and has also been in talks to join Michael B. Jordan's in Creed III.
