Less than three months after the teaser trailer for THE FIRST PURGE was released and less than three months before the PURGE franchise prequel will be reaching theatres, a full trailer for the film has arrived online.

The trailer begins with a bunch of footage from THE PURGE, THE PURGE: ANARCHY, and THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR, but don't be discouraged – there's plenty of new footage from THE FIRST PURGE after that.

Written by PURGE creator James DeMonaco but directed by Gerard McMurray – marking the first time DeMonaco has handed the helm of a PURGE film over to another director – THE FIRST PURGE has the following synopsis:

Behind every tradition lies a revolution.  Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness.  Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community.  But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

The prequel stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei.

A prequel seemed to me to be the only way to follow up ELECTION YEAR, and I'm very glad to see that DeMonaco and McMurray appear to have crafted a very intriguing exploration of how the series' annual night of madness got started. It looks like THE FIRST PURGE will offer the usual nutty stuff you expect to see in a PURGE film, with an interesting story holding it together.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one. THE FIRST PURGE arrives in theatres on July 4th.
