While found footage may illicit groans from many of you, there is no questioning how effective it can be when used in the right circumstances. Some movies work well with it while others just induce headaches. In the case of Patrick Brice‘s CREEP, this looks like a found footage winner. Starring Mark Duplass, CREEP is not quite horror and not quite drama but completely chilling.
The plot follows a man answering a Craigslist ad for a videographer chronicling his last days before succumbing to cancer. He wants to make the videos for his unborn child but as they spend more time together, it becomes apparent the man is not all that he makes himself out to be. That man, played by Duplass, owns weird costumes and acts strangely. By the end of the trailer, you have no idea what the hell is going on.
Duplass is best known as a prolific indie filmmaker and writer before he starred on the FX series The League and the recent HBO show Togetherness. He is a very effective everyman performer who has great comedic timing. CREEP looks like a nice use of his normal characteristics but amped up to make him all the more, well, creepy.
Blumhouse often gets a bad reputation thanks to their over-use of found footage, but this looks like a unique take on the genre that will hopefully surprise fans. CREEP will have a limited theatrical release on June 19, 2015 followed by a release on iTunes on June 23rd and a global debut on Netflix on July 14, 2015.
