MaXXXine: Pearl and X sequel is described as a whodunit slasher

MaXXXine, director Ti West’s sequel to his films Pearl and X, is described as being a whodunit slasher. Mia Goth stars

Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it HERE) and X (watch that one at THIS LINK), is said to have wrapped back in May – around the time that production company and distributor A24 unveiled a first look image from the movie that shows franchise star Mia Goth alongside singer Halsey. (That image can be seen at the bottom of this article.) We’ve been anxiously waiting for any further updates on MaXXXine, and while we still don’t know when this movie is going to make its way out into the world, the folks at the horror magazine Scream have learned that the film is described as being “a good old whodunit slasher”.

That seems like a more fitting description that what Goth described it as, which is “a superhero movie“. She said that because, “Maxine, as a character, has come a long way. She’s a survivor, she’s gone through a lot. When we meet her again, in this new world that she’s in, she’s really fought for everything that she has, and she’s not about to give that up. She’s going to fight for what she has. She’s a badass. There’s a strength to her. And she’s a really proactive, determined, focused woman. She goes after what she wants, and she’s not really going to take no for an answer.”

MaXXXine is written and directed by West. Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film will follow Maxine, after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame, setting out to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.

Goth and Halsey are joined in the cast by Kevin Bacon (Tremors), Elizabeth Debicki (Tenet), singer Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Bobby Cannavale (Netflix’s The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Esposito will be playing an agent for adult film and Z-list movie actors, Debicki’s character is a film director, Monaghan and Canavale are playing LAPD detectives, and Bacon is playing a private detective.

MaXXXine is being produced by A24, Ti West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. Goth serves as executive producer. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting reported that West had this to say about MaXXXine: “What I can tell you is that we’re going to catch up with Maxine. And we’re going to find out what she’s up to. The way that X is a movie that is informed by and affected by independent exploitation auteur Americana and 1970s cinema, and Pearl is perhaps affected by the Golden Age of Hollywood and the glitz and glamor of cinema, MaXXXine will be more about within the industry itself and the boom of VHS.” According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, the movie “will deal with the dangerous world of underground filmmaking.” Goth has said that MaXXXine has the best script of the trilogy.

Are you a fan of X and Pearl, and are you looking forward to MaXXXine? Are you glad to hear it’s a whodunit slasher? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
