From what I’ve read, the recent Austin premiere of MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D received a wildly positive reaction from the crowd in attendance… but will you be able to experience the same?
Filmmakers and studios appear to be embracing the 3D process — faster than the theaters, sadly. According to the NY Times, when Lionsgate’s remake of the 1981 slasher flick opens on January 16th, only 900 screens will have pickaxes whirling out of the screen in three glorious dimensions. A regular 2D release of the film will hit 1600 screens.
So you might have to travel a bit for the full head-hacking experience, which could well be worth it for something different in the horror genre. “It’s visually stunning and a new way for this audience to experience a film but isn’t painful in the way some of the old 3-D films were, where they just rammed stuff in the audience’s face,” says director Patrick Lussier. But there will still be plenty of spraying gore, to be sure!
