Over the past few weeks, Warner Bros. has released a number of character images for Denis Villeneuve's DUNE, giving fans of Frank Herbert's science-fiction classic a glimpse of what's to come when the highly anticipated remake blows into theaters. For a time, the aforementioned pics were enough to sate those looking forward to the ARRIVAL and BLADE RUNNER 2049 director's ambitious vision. However, appetites for DUNE are fierce indeed, and so now we have a new photo that shows two of the film's characters in action.

In the photo, we find Timothee Charlamet's protagonist Paul Atreides, balancing on an airborne ornithopter, while flying over a desolate-looking planet Arrakis with Josh Brolin's weapon's teacher, Gurney Halleck, lending the hero a helping hand. The new pic hails from Empire, who recently spoke with Villeneuve about the nature of the new image.

“It’s Paul’s first contact with the deep desert, where he’s mesmerised by it,” Villeneuve explained to Empire. “He has a strange feeling of being home. There’s a lot of action at this specific moment, and [it’s] one of the scenes in the movie that I’m starting to get pretty proud of.”

Last month while speaking with Vanity Fair, Charlamet explained to the outlet that he was stoked to contribute to DUNE on account of Paul's rich character arc. “The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” said Charlamet. “He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”

Between the costumes, synopsis, set pieces and more, DUNE sounds as if it's poised to be the science-fiction film event of the year. In addition to the film's majestic and interplanetary backdrop, the upcoming DUNE also features a Murderers' Row of talent, including stars the likes of Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian and Stephen McKinnley Henderson, among several others.

If all goes well,  Denis Villeneuve's DUNE will arrive in theaters on December 18, 2020.
