Best Movie & TV Trailers of the Week – Detective Pikachu, The OA, Hellboy

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Hello and welcome to the best movie & TV trailers of the week!

The new HELLBOY trailer certainly seems better than the last, and from the looks of it, it appears that Andy Muschietti's upcoming IT adaptation and Neil Marshall's Dark Horse Comics project may go toe-to-toe in proving who truly has the bloodiest scene of the year. Either way, it will be interesting to see how Marshall's work fares in the face of Guillermo del Toro's unshakeable fandom.

The creators of the ABCS OF DEATH are back with a brand new anthology titled THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL, which promises eight different tall tales from eight different countries, calling upon the masterminds behind the wickedly gruesome BASKIN in addition to the directors of GOODNIGHT MOMMY to deliver brand new nightmares to us horror fans. I personally can't wait for this one.

There's also a nifty litlte side-by-side comparison of what it would be like to witness the upcoming AVENGERS: ENDGAME in standard versus seeing it in IMAX, and not gonna lie, they might have me convinced. This isn't just a movie, it's an event, and it's one that might be worth checking out in higher resolution just so we can capture the space drifting Tony Stark in all of his beautifully broody HD glory.

Martin Scorsese's THE IRISHMAN let loose a little teaser for its eager fans, and although I'm beyond stoked for this cast and director joining forces (Robert De Niro! Al Pacino! Joe Pesci! Harvey Keitel!), the trailer leaves much to the imagination. It's exciting to be reminded of the gift that will soon be bestowed upon us, but I want details and I want them now. Give me the good stuff, Marty.

Next up, we have TV trailers! This week brings us new peeks at CRITTERS: A NEW BINGE, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Season 5 Part 2, HIS DARK MATERIALS, TURN UP CHARLIE, WHEN THEY SEE US, TACOMA FD, THE TICK Season 2, GOOD GIRLS Season 2, THE OA Part 2, BOSCH Season 5, THE VILLAGE, LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS, THE CODE, and JIMMY CARR: THE BEST OF ULTIMATE GOLD GREATEST HITS.

It's a tough call, but this week the award for best trailer goes to none other than DETECTIVE PIKACHU. I know, I know, how could a Pokemon movie starring Ryan Reynolds beat out a gangster movie that sees De Niro and Pacino teaming up for the first time since Michael Mann's HEAT? Well, for one, as I previously stated, that little trailer brings a new definition to the word teaser — it literally shows us nothing. In terms of upcoming movies, that project is probably at the top of my most anticipated list, but the teaser itself just can't win in a battle for best trailer because it doesn't show any footage at all. Second, I am actually pretty shocked at how incredible this movie looks, especially considering it's based on a card game I used to play back before I was legally allowed to drink — or even wander outside by myself without parental supervision, really. The CG looks terrific, Reynolds is in top form, and each trailer looks better than the last. Simply put, to my surprise, DETECTIVE PIKACHU has become one of the films I'm most looking forward to this year. Watch this spot and tell me I'm wrong.
