Cary Fukunaga refutes rumor that he bailed on Bond 25 crew to play games

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

As an avid gamer and full-time employee here at JoBlo.com, I know what it's like to have to manage my time accordingly with regard to work vs. play. Every morning, I get up three hours before my shift begins, just so I can be sure that my ever-expanding library of games doesn't go to waste. Currently, I'm working my way through Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on the Playstation 4 as well as Cadence of Hyrule and My Friend Pedro for the Nintendo Switch. With so many amazing titles to experience across the video games spectrum, I'm well-aware that there's never enough time to appreciate them all.

In the spirit of responsibility vs. video games, I thought it'd be fun to follow up on the recent rumor that BOND 25 director Cary Fukunaga abandoned his crew to clock some extra time with Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2. Word of Fukunaga shirking his duties as director of the next Bond feature was first reported by The Sun when the outlet claimed that "mutiny had erupted on the set" of BOND 25 because the filmmaker was too busy "playing his Playstation." To be precise, a source claiming to be close to the BOND 25 production told The Sun "There is real mutiny right now on the set. It's bad enough that Cary was so late for filming and held everyone up, but then for the crew to be asked to work extra hours to cover it was just the final straw. They then set up a scene but the director failed to turn up for several hours because he was playing on his Playstation."

Upon hearing the rumor, Fukunaga took to his personal Instagram account to set the record straight while also paying tribute to his hard working cast and crew.

Our Production Designer/Artful master of living for the day, Mark Tildesley— commented to me once that being a director must feel like dying of a thousand cuts, because of the constant stream of questions one must field. There’s not a minute on this job that isn’t scheduled, and even during a shoot day, in the hours before call, between takes and setups, and after we wrap there’s always a line of dedicated and hard working department heads hungry to prep our next sequences, no one sleeps on this kind of job. So sure it’s hard, but it’s still the best job in the world and I’d never disrespect the hardest working cast and crew. We’re all in this together. ð?? As for my PS4 relationship, if my RDR2 progress is any indication, it’s been stunted at 63% for months and if anyone spoils the end for me before I wrap on B25 I’m going to be pissed.

As you can see from the Instagram post above, Fukunaga implies that The Sun's reporting was inspired by pure bunk. He was also sure to recognize the talents and dedication of his BOND 25 crew, who Fukunaga says have his undivided attention while working on the project.

Here is the official synopsis for BOND 25:

Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Personally, I thought this rumor was pure garbage from the onset. I mean, who takes over a Bond film from Danny Boyle only to slack on the production in favor of watching Arthur Morgan ride another horse off a cliff or take a 20-minute, unskippable stroll up a craggy mountainside? Career suicide much?

Anyway, I'm glad that Fukunaga has taken time out of his busy schedule to put this nasty little rumor to rest. After all, the last thing BOND 25 needs is more delays, production disasters, or injured crew members, amiright?

BOND 25, starring Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Léa Seydoux, David Dencik and Rami Malek is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2020.
