Daniel Radcliffe thinks the Harry Potter series will be rebooted eventually

When it comes to Hollywood rebooting or remaking classic movie series and TV shows in one way or another it seems no property is off limits, and really, it’s only a matter of time before your favorites get some sort of modern update or sequel. Even beloved series like HARRY POTTER may not be immune to the reboot treatment, and Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe thinks its only a matter of time before a new take on the magical series is put into the works.

Radcliffe was speaking with TV Guide while at the Television Critics Association press tour while promoting his new show, MIRACLE WORKERS, when he was asked about the prospect of the series being rebooted – for TV or otherwise. The once-boy-wizard thinks that the series has a bit of an unbreakable spell over it at the moment that makes it impervious to any such new takes, but he does think that in the future someone will come along with a new spin on the fan-favorite series.

"I don't know at this point what would be gained by rebooting it for TV, but that's not necessarily the goal, I suppose. I definitely think there will be another version of it within my lifetime. It will be interesting to see. At the moment those films have sort of a sacred varnish on them, but that will be worn away at some point… I'm just intrigued to see when that happens."

While the main run of movies ended in 2011 with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2, it didn’t take long for Warner Bros. and author J.K. Rowling to spinoff the series with 2016’s FANTASTIC BEASTS, which got a sequel last year with several more being planned. Those spinoffs have not been as big as the mains series of films but their global success speaks to the fan dedication and recognizability of the series, which for a younger generation of viewers has become the ultimate movie franchise. The passion for the original series may keep any sort of direct reboots at bay for quite some time, but there has already been a continuation of the series of sorts with the smash hit play HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD, which takes place several years after the events of the final movie/book.

But even if the adventures of Harry and the gang can’t be touched for some time that doesn’t mean there isn’t a swath of stories in Rowling’s world to pull from. Even Radcliffe has thought about the other characters and stories that could “absolutely turn into a TV series, 100 percent.” When prompted further, he said he would like to see "a series with the older generation,” like one focused on the Marauders (of Marauder’s Map fame).

What with Disney finding a way to bring back the original cast of the Star Wars movies for a new trilogy of films that picked up years after the events of RETURN OF THE JEDI, it’s not too far-fetched to think something similar will happen for the Harry Potter series some years down the road. Of course, something like that would be a long way away – possibly even decades – and Radcliffe seems to agree. But in the meantime, its absolutely plausible to think that a new show around characters we know would get the TV treatment, especially as the FANTASTIC BEASTS movie fail to conjure much love.
