Beverly Hills Cop 4, Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy seems to be on the cusp of a major resurgence, and the actor's next project may see him returning to one of his first major successes – BEVERLY HILLS COP. The 1984 film starred Murphy as Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who travels to California in order to investigate and track down the killers of an old friend. The film was a huge hit and went on to spawn two sequels, and there have been rumblings of a fourth installment of the franchise for decades.

While speaking with Collider recently, Eddie Murphy laid out the next stage of his career, which will see him moving forward on BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 after completing work on the COMING TO AMERICA sequel.

Yeah that’s what we’re doing after Coming to America 2. We’re doing Beverly Hills Cop and then the plan is to get back on stage and do standup. That’s what I’ll be doing mostly is standup. These movies and Saturday Night Live it’s kind of like…I’m looking at it as a bookend. If I decided I wanted to stay on the couch forever, I ended it on a funny note.

As the third installment of BEVERLY HILLS COP is widely considered to be the weakest film in the franchise, it would be nice for Murphy to be able to swoop in years later and give the character a worthy conclusion, similar to what Sylvester Stallone was able to do with Rocky Balboa and John Rambo.

Eddie Murphy will next be seen in DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, a biographical comedy film in which Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore, a comedian, actor, musican, and producer best known for portraying a character known as Dolemite in both stand-up and a series of blaxploitation films. The film will have a limited theatrical release on October 4th before hitting Netflix on October 25th. Murphy will then reprise his role of Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda, in COMING TO AMERICA 2, which will find Akeem discovering that he has a son he never knew about, a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. In an effort to honour his father's dying wish to groom his son as a new crowned prince, Akeem must once again return to America. COMING TO AMERICA 2 is slated to hit theaters on December 18, 2020. In addition to those projects, Murphy will also be returning to Saturday Night Live on December 21, 2019 to host the show for the first time since he left back in 1984.
