Ian McShane says the Hellboy reboot will surprise a lot of people

Hellboy (David Harbour) will be returning to theaters next month, and this time, he'll be bringing an ample helping of blood and guts along with him as the reboot will be the first entry of the franchise with an R-rating. We've caught a glimpse of the bloodier and filthier version of Hellboy in the film's red-band trailers, but Ian McShane, who plays Professor Trevor Bruttenholm in the reboot, recently told The New York Times that audiences will be are still in store for plenty of surprises.

I think that’s going to surprise a lot of people. David [Harbour of “Stranger Things”] is a marvelous actor. He just fills out the role. It was nice and bittersweet taking over [Professor Bruttenholm] from a dear old friend of mine, John Hurt. But it’s not Part 3. It’s a complete reboot of [Guillermo del Toro’s] “Hellboy,” and I think they picked the right guy in David. It was a pleasure to work with him and be in Bulgaria for three weeks, a country I’ve never been to before. Greatest fresh vegetables I’ve ever tasted. And the scripts are funny and smart and bright, and the action is fantastic, and I have grandkids who love all that. They can’t wait.

I don't know about you, but the biggest takeaway from that statement is that Bulgaria has the greatest fresh vegetabes that Ian McShane has ever tasted. The upcoming HELLBOY reboot finds Mike Mignola's creation caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human as he battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge. In addition to David Harbour and Ian McShane, the film also stars Milla Jovovich as Nimue, the Queen of Blood, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan and Daniel Dae Kim as Major Ben Daimio.

David Harbour has previously teased that HELLBOY will find the title character being much more brutal than we've previously seen. "There’s really a sense that you’re actually killing things, even if they are giants or monsters. You’re chopping their heads off, you’re bathing in their blood and you’re feeling the complex feelings of actually cutting the heart out of another thing," Harbour said. "We’re taking the time to deal with the fact that Hellboy is a killer. He’s a weapon."

HELLBOY will burst into theaters on April 12, 2019.
