Jason Bourne producer wants a new story and director for a sixth film

Producer Frank Marshall wants to get back into action with the JASON BOURNE franchise and he wants a new director to offer up a fresh story for the sixth film.

While speaking with "Collider" Marshall expressed interest in bringing Jason Bourne back again and he elaborated on his hopes to do so with a new director at the helm:

"I do like the Bourne series, and I do think that’s an opportunity for different filmmakers to come in now. So, I’m hoping that we can find a new story for Bourne and a new filmmaker. We are looking."

While director Doug Liman got things started on the right foot with 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY, it can be argued that director Paul Greengrass gave the franchise its voice and identity when he stepped in for the sequel THE BOURNE SUPREMACY. Greengrass would go on to direct The BOURNE ULTIMATUM and JASON BOURNE with all of the film's he's guided in the franchise becoming a financial success. SUPREMACY and ULTIMATUM were well-received by critics while JASON BOURNE scored a franchise-low 54% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. JASON BOURNE did gain fan interest since the film brought Matt Damon back to the franchise after 2012's THE BOURNE LEGACY focused on a new character named Aaron Cross played by Jeremy Renner. That film also received mixed reviews, faring a tad better than JASON BOURNE with a 56% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Where could the BOURNE franchise go for a sixth film? Marshall seems to want a fresh take but that was attempted with THE BOURNE LEGACY to mixed results. LEGACY didn't exactly flop but with a gross of $113.2 million at the domestic box office, it's the lowest earner of the franchise. Marshall has suggested that combining both Damon and Renner's characters in a film together could be a worthwhile endeavor but a lot of it would come down to getting the major players on board. I don't hear Matt Damn clamoring to make a sixth BOURNE movie, especially without Paul Greengrass since they have built quite a rapport on the films they have done.  We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.
