Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler reportedly being sought for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

The casting race for Marvel’s upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY continues, still with no official announcements.  Now, it seems that Marvel is putting feelers out for some heavy hitters, namely that of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. The two comedic actors are being sought for unspecified roles (or perhaps the same role), according to Latino Review.

My money would be on both actors being “felt out” for Rocket Racoon, a role that will no doubt be all CGI and in need of a strong, comedic talent to carry the weight.  Sandler or Carrey would fit that bill well, although my choice would be Carrey.  Sandler’s been doing the same silly voices for decades without showing much range.  Carrey, on the other hand, has a more deft touch in both the comedic and dramatic.

Director James Gunn has deflected rumors right and left, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he deflects this one, too.  However, that’s part of his job at the moment, and will be for a while.  Keeping things secret is no easy task.

LR is also reporting that three more actors have joined the battle for the role of Peter Quill aka Starlord, the human leader of the Guardians.  Thus far, we’ve heard of everyone from Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Joel Edgerton to Jim Sturgess and more for the role.  Now, you can toss in Wes Bentley, Cam Gigandet, and Chris Lowell, who are all apparently testing for the role.

It seems that Marvel is very keen on locking down the perfect player for Starlord, which is consistent with their methods on previous films.  Anyone remember the casting race for Captain America?  I think the fact that they’re looking for the right fit is a good sign for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, so it actually instills confidence in the project, rather than taking it away.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is slated to open on August 1, 2014.
