EXTRACTION stars Chris Hemsworth (AVENGERS: ENDGAME) as Tyler Rake, "a fearless black market mercenary who embarks on the deadliest mission of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an international crime lord." The Netflix film has proven to be hugely popular, which has led to plenty of discussion regarding a sequel, and Deadline has reported that Joe Russo has just closed a deal to pen the next installment of the new action franchise.

"The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be," Russo said. "We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience." While director Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth will likely return, those deals won't be made until the script is ready. I haven't had the chance to see EXTRACTION for myself yet, but from what I hear, the ending of the film definitely leaves the opportunity for Rake to return, but it's also possible the film could take on the form of a prequel, depending on which direction Russo chooses to go. Russo also said he expects Hargrave to return for the sequel, "There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal," Russo said. "What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action."

Sam Hargrave revealed last week that the thought of a sequel originated while the film was still in production.

As soon as it got mentioned, that thought of a sequel — because, I guess, Netflix was enjoying the dailies and things were coming together and people were like, ‘Oh, this could be…’. You know, you talk about all these things. Is it a franchise? Is it all these things? Who knows until the movie comes out and the audience responds. They’ll be the ones who decide. But it was talked about. As soon as it was, Joe brought up an interesting point that most of the time, you get a sequel. Rarely do you go back in time into prequels. […] You get the sense that Chris and Harbour have a great chemistry […] so we thought that was a very interesting way — if you were to go backwards in time — that you could play with the prequel to a story like this.

Are you down for more Tyler Rake? Would you rather see a sequel or prequel to the film? EXTRACTION is now streaming on Netflix, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray!
