Lee eats Pi

There was once a time when M. Night Shyamalan decided he wanted to make an adaptation of Yann Martel’s celebrated novel THE LIFE OF PI his next film. Shyamalan instead decided to make THE HAPPENING. That in turn gave us gems like this clip. So not exactly the smartest move by Shyamalan but that left the door open for someone else to try and come in to adapt PI. Enter Ang Lee. The BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN director is in talks with Fox to direct the film. The existing scripts for the film will be chucked in the garbage while Lee supervises a new draft. It’s unclear if he’ll bring frequent writing partner James Schamus with him. Unclear because Schamus actually runs another competing studio, Focus Features, and he might have some bones about working for Fox. The story revolves around a young Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and remains stranded on a life raft with a tiger, an orangutan, a zebra and a hyena. I will say no more for fear of treading into spoiler territory. Lee is currently wrapping up post-production on TAKING WOODSTOCK, which will hit theaters this August.
