The Unholy: Sony sets new horror film for Easter weekend

With vaccinations in full swing in the United States of America, it looks like Sony is expecting people to grab their popcorn, sodas, and communion wafers for the sacrilegious spectacle that is seeing a horror movie on the big screen on Easter weekend. Can I get an Amen? After all, there is something heartwarming about inverted crucifixes, demonic nuns, and blood-splattered teens that makes you think about Christianity, am I right? That's why Evan Spiliotopoulos’ The Unholy is the perfect film to help wash down your bunny-shaped chocolates.

Based on the James Herbert novel Shrine, The Unholy follows Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister.

Ready to commit sins on the silver screen this April 2nd, The Unholy is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Spiliotopoulos, who also wrote and directed the feature. Executive producing the PG-13 horror film is Andrea Ajemian and Romel Adam, which has Katie Aselton, William Sadler, Cricket Brown, Diogo Morgado, and Cary Elwes set to star.

I don't know about you, but nothing says let's commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ like a story about a possessed miracle worker. Here's hoping this movie features one hell of a good Easter egg hunt, eh?
