Todd Phillips' JOKER starring Joaquin Phoenix has yet to see its wide release in theaters, though the film has already become one of the most talked about cinematic spectacles of the year. In late August, JOKER was screened for critics who were in attendance at the annual Venice Film Festival. Many had praised the film as being a bold and brash exploration of the iconic DC villain, while others expressed concern over the project's romanticism toward violence and mixed messaging about the fragility of the human psyche. Personally, I'm very excited to see the film and form my own opinion about its contents, and now you can pre-order your tickets for the big show online.

Analysts have JOKER laughing up a $76 to $80 million debut when it takes the stage in theaters on Friday, October 4th. However, executives attached to the project have stated that the film's predicted totals could be inaccurate based on how divided audience members will likely feel about the film. As you know, word of mouth can often make or break a project's opening salvo, and it sounds as if studios are a tad apprehensive about JOKER's overall appeal to the masses. Previously, Phillips has described JOKER as a "slow burn," which as you know is a formula that doesn't always play well with general audiences. Be that as it may, curiosity is a force that often kills far more than cats, and it could be that folks will show up for the Clown Prince of Crime's origin tale out of a "need to know" alone.

In the upcoming film, Joaquin Phoenix stars as Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who is driven insane and becomes the psychopathic criminal mastermind known as the Joker. Joining Phoenix for the criminal-led cautionary tale are Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brian Tyree Henry, Brett Cullen, Bill Camp, and Josh Pals, among others.

Recently our own Chris Bumbray attended a screening of JOKER at this year's TIFF event. After witnessing Phillips' TAXI DRIVER-like take on the classic Batman villain, Chris commented:

"Certainly, JOKER is the film to see this fall, and one that will no doubt become the water cooler event of the year, and the one everyone will have an opinion on. It’s probably the most provocative, uncompromising American movie to be made since FIRST REFORMED, the difference being more people will see this in a day than did during that film’s entire run."
