Tom Cruise watches footage from his ankle-breaking Mission: Impossible stunt

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

When it comes to jaw-dropping stunts, Tom Cruise rarely disappoints, especially as the actor typically insists on doing all of them himself, but it does result in the occasional injury, the most recent of which actually led to a temporary shutdown of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT. While performing a stunt in which he had to leap between buildings, Tom Cruise broke his ankle while slamming against the side of the wall. In typical Tom Cruise fashion, he hauled himself up and attempted to complete the scene. Video of the accident was revealed at the time, but Tom Cruise brought some official footage with him while appearing on The Graham Norton Show along with Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Henry Cavill.

The entire segment is well worth the watch, particuarly as Simon Pegg has apparently gone out of his way to avoid the footage until now, but if you're here for the nitty gritty, the first of three separate angles of the incident begins at 1:48. Although you don't see any bones or blood, I'd say that it isn't for the squeamish as Cruise's foot moves in quite the unnatural way. A photo of the stunt, without the broken ankle, was revealed earlier today.

The official synopsis for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT:

The best intentions often come back to haunt you.  MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong.  Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT will hit theaters on July 27, 2018.
