Tom Hiddleston to star as Hank Williams in I Saw the Light

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

THE AVENGERS star Tom Hiddleston is putting away his action-movie bad-guy image to play Country & Western legend Hank Williams in director Marc Abraham’s biopic I SAW THE LIGHT. The movie will be based on the Williams biography by Colin Escott, and word is that Hiddleston will even do his own singing. I just imagine him belting out hits like "Your Cheatin’ Heart" and "I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry," and got pretty excited.

UPDATE: Hiddleston has shared an image of himself as Williams via Twitter:

This will be a challenging role but it's nothing he can’t handle I’m sure; he has shown great range in the action genre, drama (THE DEEP BLUE SEA), and comedy (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS). If you told me the dude could sing and play a guitar, I'd say that sounds about right.

The biopic will chronicle his rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life. William’s life and career were all too brief; troubled by health issues and substance abuse, he died in 1953 at the age of 29 of heart failure. Abraham previously directed another biographical film, FLASH OF GENIUS with Greg Kinnear.

I SAW THE LIGHT will begin shooting in Louisiana this October. Meanwhile Hiddleston is currently shooting the Guillermo del Toro-directed CRIMSON PEAK.

Can you guys see Loki belting one out or what?
