Venom will reportedly be an R-rated kickoff to a Marvel universe at Sony

Not long ago we got word that Venom would finally be making his way to the big screen with Sony planning for an October 5, 2018 release. That’s not very far off considering the size of a project like that, plus with casting and a director needed to be found. But apparently Sony already has it’s ducks in a row, tone wise at least, as a new report claims the studio knows exactly where the movie is going to go.

Collider got a scoop claiming Sony wants the upcoming Venom movie to be rated R, and it will kick off their own Marvel movie universe with what characters they have the rights to. The report notes that this could change when a director is found, but the tip does make sense given how ALIEN: COVENANT writer Dante Harper has been hired to write the script.

This news of a greater Marvel universe at Sony is given more credence considering they hired THOR: RAGNAROK writer Chris Yost to write a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie. Most of these characters are hinged on the presence of Spider-Man, who is currently placed in the main MCU with the other Avengers, so how that will all work out is anyone’s guess as these two universes will have zero connection to each other.

Of course this is just early news, and like the report said any of this can change and adapt as filming gets underway. However, given the popularity of recent R-rated superhero movies like LOGAN and DEADPOOL, and Venom’s nature in the comics, an R outing is not too farfetched. Hiring of Harper means Sony is probably looking for some sort of horror angle, so maybe something with “Venom meets ALIEN” is in the works. That would be crazy. But good crazy? No clue.

VENOM is aiming for October 5, 2018.
