Netflix cancels Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The last couple weeks have been a rough ride for Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. First ABC passed on his series The Brides (which would have been about the Brides of Dracula), then the CW cancelled the Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene after just one season. Now Netflix has announced that they are cancelling Aguirre-Sacasa's series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Sabrina has had two seasons that were each split in half; "part 4", the second half of season 2, will be released on the Netflix streaming service sometime later this year, and that will be the end of the show. The series was originally being developed for the CW, but it has been said that "Netflix's ability to offer a two-season commitment enticed Warner Bros. Television to move the series to the streaming service". As it turns out, that two-season commitment is all that Netflix was able to offer.

Aguirre-Sacasa sent out the following statement:

Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from day one. The cast, beginning with Kiernan (Shipka) as everyone's favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show. I'm also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can't wait for everyone to see part four."

Part 3 of the show had the following synopsis:

Part Three finds Sabrina reeling from the harrowing events of Part Two. Though she defeated her father Lucifer, the Dark Lord remains trapped within the human prison of her beloved boyfriend, Nicholas Scratch. Sabrina can't live with herself, knowing that Nick made the ultimate sacrifice and is suffering, burning in Hell under Madam Satan’s watchful eye. So with an assist from her mortal friends, “The Fright Club” (consisting of Harvey, Rosalind, and Theo), Sabrina makes it her mission to free him from eternal damnation and bring him back into her arms. However, the Dark Lord's unseating has sent shockwaves through the realms—and, with no one on the throne, Sabrina must assume the title of “Queen” to defend it against a challenger, the handsome Prince of Hell Caliban. Meanwhile, in Greendale, a mysterious carnival rolls into town, bringing with it a threat to the Spellmans and the coven: A tribe of pagans looking to resurrect an ancient evil…

In part 4,

the Eldritch Terrors will descend upon Greendale. The coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned and The Darkness, to name a few), all leading up to The Void, which is the End of All Things. As the witches wage war, with the help of the Fright Club, Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) begins to slowly earn his way back into Sabrina’s heart, but it may be too late.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina herself. Her co-stars on the show have included Miranda Otto as Sabrina's disciplinarian aunt Zelda; Lucy Davis as her nurturing aunt Hilda; Gavin Leatherwood as warlock Nicholas Scratch; Ross Lynch as her pal Harvey Kinkle; Jaz Sinclair as her best friend Rosalind Walker; Lachlan Watson as her friend Theo Putnam; Chance Perdomo as her warlock cousin Ambrose; Michelle Gomez as Sabrina's teacher Mary Wardell, who becomes possessed by the devil's handmaiden Madam Satan; Richard Coyle as Father Blackwood, High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts, a man with a "terrifying dark agenda"; Bronson Pinchot as Baxter High's villainous puritanical principal George Hawthorne; Alexis Denisof as the handsome and charming Adam Masters; Jedidiah Goodacre as an enigmatic club owner named Dorian Gray; Skye P. Marshall as voodoo priestess Mambo Marie; Sam Corlett as Caliban, Prince of Hell; Johnathan Whitesell as Robin, a hobgoblin who develops feelings for Theo; and Tati Gabrielle as Prudence, leader of a trio of witches called the Weird Sisters and a character who has a possibly life-threatening grudge against Sabrina.
