Disney has debuted a new trailer for their latest feature, Pinocchio, just two weeks before its Disney+ release.

Disney’s Pinocchio offers a “retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy.”

The new trailer shows a wealth of new footage from Pinocchio, with more detailed looks at Geppetto’s workshop, Pleasure Island and the monstrous whale. It also features a new version of “When You Wish Upon a Star”, which won an Oscar for Disney’s first version of the tale, becoming the first animated movie to do so. This version will be sung by The Blue Fairy, whereas 1940’s version was sung by Jiminy Cricket. The 1940 film was Disney’s second animated feature, after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The cast of Disney’s Pinocchio includes Tom Hanks as Geppetto, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo as The Blue Fairy, and more. Keegan-Michael Key and Lorraine Bracco also lend voices. This is the fourth pairing of Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks after Forrest Gump (1994), Cast Away (2000) and The Polar Express (2004).

Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio is actually one of three adaptations out this year. We already know of Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion take (due out in November), with a voice cast that includes Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and Ron Perlman. But did you know a Russian animated version went straight-to-video in North America this year? Oh, and Pauly Shore voices Pinocchio! How’s that for casting, buuuuudy?

Like a number of other features, Pinocchio will skip a theatrical run. Instead, it will premiere on Disney+ Day, September 8, only on the streaming service.

What do you think of the new trailer for Pinocchio? Will you watch the adaptation when it premieres next month?
