I wasn’t very fond of the teaser trailer for Shawn Levy’s REAL STEEL; perhaps because it was too brief and, as the film’s concept is rather ridiculous, it didn’t have much room to get its tone and idea across. Now that the full trailer has come out, we’re allowed to get a better idea of what this flick is trying to be. It still has an unavoidable air of silliness about it (for some reason I can’t get over the shot of Hugh Jackman and the robot training together), but I must admit that it rather seems like it’ll be the crowd-pleaser it obviously wants to be.
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near future [the year 2020], where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
Starring Hugh Jackman, Anthony Mackie, Evangeline Lilly, Hope Davis, Olga Fonda, James Rebhorn, Karl Yune and Kevin Durand, REAL STEEL opens on OCTOBER 7th. Check out the trailer below.
