New Scream movie has officially been rated R

There’s a new Scream movie scheduled to reach theatres on January 14, 2022, and with just over a month to go before it shows up on the big screen, the Motion Picture Association has announced the rating they’ve chosen to give the film. There would have been a lot of annoyed Scream fans if this movie had ended up with anything less than an R – and thankfully the filmmakers have avoided that issue. The new Scream has officially earned an R rating for “strong bloody violence, language throughout, and some sexual references“. So pretty much exactly what you expect to see from a Scream movie.

Although this new movie is simply titled Scream, it is a follow-up to the previous four Scream movies, with franchise stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette reprising the roles of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley. Scream 4‘s Marley Shelton is also back as Judy Hicks.

This “legacy-quel” is coming to us from Ready or Not (watch it HERE) directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The screenplay was written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Vanderbilt also produced the film for Project X Entertainment, alongside Paul Neinstein and William Sherak. Chad Villella, Gary Barber, Peter Oillataguerre, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, and Marianne Maddalena serve as executive producers alongside original Scream writer Kevin Williamson.

The film has the following synopsis:

Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.
