It's a no-go for the Night School pilot at NBC. The project, based on the 2018 comedy starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish will not be moving forward as planned.
The half-hour multi-cam comedy had originally gotten a pilot order in January, but the pandemic shutdown virtually all pilot production in March. The broadcast network then announced in June that it would resume production on most of its pilots later in the year, with Night School being the first pilot to resume production once it restarted. Despite that assertion, "Deadline" reports that the decision not to proceed with Night School was made a while ago as NBC sorted through their other comedy pilots.
The comedies gaining steam for series orders are the single-camera American Auto and Grand Crew. Other pilots that NBC bookmarked to shoot later this year are Ordinary Joe from House alums Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner, and Langdon, which centers around the character made famous by from Dan Brown’s novels and the Tom Hanks films.
Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the film version of Night School followed a group of high school dropouts that are forced to attend a night school in hope that they'll pass the GED exam to finish high school. In addition to Hart and Haddish, the film also stars Rob Riggle, Romany Malco, and Taran Killam. The TV adaptation would've followed the same trajectory and it starred Shanola Hampton in the role played by Tiffany Haddish in the film, with Josh Segarra playing the role played by Hart. The cast also included Ian Gomez, James Earl, Joe Massingill, and Collette Wolfe.
