Magnolia Pictures has released a new trailer for Bob Odenkirk’s next foray into action outside of the Nobody franchise and it looks like a lot of fun. Normal is written by John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad from a story conceived by him and Odenkirk. Ben Wheatley directs Normal. His credits include Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, Free Fire; Happy New Year, Colin Burstead; Rebecca, In the EarthMeg 2: The Trench, the upcoming BULK, and the six-episode series Generation Z. Henry Winkler and Lena Headey also star in the action romp.

The official description reads,
“The latest collaboration between Bob Odenkirk, JOHN WICK creator Derek Kolstad and NOBODY producer Marc Provissiero, director Ben Wheatley’s (FREE FIRE, HIGH RISE) kinetic neo-Western stars Odenkirk as an unassuming substitute sheriff with a troubled past who, after moving to a small, sleepy town, responds to a bank robbery and unknowingly uncovers something far more explosive.

For Sheriff Ulysses (Odenkirk), his provisional posting to the quaint Midwestern American town of Normal was meant to be a welcome respite from both his marital woes and recent moral injuries in the line of duty. But when a botched bank robbery interrupts the municipality’s tranquil pace, a dark secret is inadvertently exposed, and Ulysses soon discovers that the town is anything but its namesake.”

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray recently had the opportunity to watch the film at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and gave it a rating of 7/10 in his review. Bumbray said it was precisely what he wanted from a Bob Odenkirk-led action film, saying, “It’s packed with carnage, with him in top form as both action star and leading man. His chemistry with [Jess] McLeod is especially strong, and if a follow-up were to focus on the two of them as a team, I’d be first in line to check it out.” He also commented on how the film “plays perfectly to Odenkirk’s strengths. It’s loaded to the brim with action, mostly in the form of shootouts (though there are some brutal hand-to-hand scraps peppered in). It recalls Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, with about an hour of the movie taken up by a sustained action sequence spanning the geography of the town in which Odenkirk’s character, Ulysses, is trapped.”

Normal hits theaters on April 17.
