The clouds parted on Thursday, revealing surprising casting news about Jamie Foxx playing God in the forthcoming comedy Not Another Church Movie. The Academy Award-winning actor steps into the holy role opposite The Wrestler and Iron Man 2 star Mickey Rourke, who plays the Devil in the latest project from writer-director Johnny Mack (Real Husbands of HollywoodSlow Jamz).

Filmed before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Not Another Church Movie features Kevin Daniels (The Big LeapModern Family), Vivica A. Fox (Independence DayBatman & Robin), Tisha Campbell (MartinHouse Party), Lamorne Morris (New GirlBarbershop: The Next Cut), Jasmine Guy (A Different WorldDead Like Me), Kyla Pratt (Love & BasketballThe Proud Family), and more.

According to DeadlineNot Another Church Movie revolves around Taylor Pharry (Daniels), “an ambitious young man given a holy mission from God himself: to tell his family’s stories and inspire his community. His only concern? His family and community. What he doesn’t know is that the Devil has plans of his own.”

“We are thrilled to have Mr. Foxx be a part of this hilarious comedy and bring his incredible talent to the role of God, working with Foxx and Johnny Mack was a true blessing,” said producer Cummings in a statement to Deadline. “This film is a unique blend of new and established talent, and we can’t wait to hear the laughs and for audiences to see the magic that happens on the big screen. This movie will not disappoint.”

Added McCaffrey, “The name talent that has come together for this fun comedy is unprecedented. You see all the actors having fun, especially Foxx playing God.”

Foxx’s next feature is Strays, a live-action comedy about an abandoned dog (voiced by Will Ferrell) who teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner. Foxx voices Bug, a foul-mouther Boston Terrier, with Isla Fisher playing Maggie, Randall Park as Hunter, Brett Gelman as Willy, Rob Riggle as Rolf, Josh Gad as Gus, Sofia Vergara as Dolores the Couch, and Will Forte as Doug, Reggie’s (Ferrell) asshole owner. Strays is playing in theaters now.
