Producer doesn’t even know what’s going on with New Mutants

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director Josh Boone's X-MEN horror movie THE NEW MUTANTS was supposed to hit the big screen back on April 13, 2018 – which is the week after A QUIET PLACE hit for reference. Then the movie was delayed a whopping 10 months to February 22, 2019, and said to be undergoing extensive reshoots, partly to add another character into the mix. Fox then pushed THE NEW MUTANTS back another six months to August 2, 2019.

Then last week we got word that the movie is being pushed back again… and possibly heading to an October premiere on Hulu. We're really not sure at this point what the hell is going on with the movie, but it seems like we're in good company as not even the movie's co-producer Lauren Shuler Donner knows what the film's fate will be. The producer recently spoke with CinemaBlend about the film, and if it actually would hit theaters.

Co-producer Lauren Shuler Donner:

I’m being told yes. As I say, I took a step back, so that was under Simon [Kinberg]’s purview. I hope so. They worked on it hard. I do like the idea, we started off as more of a team kind of movie, and the decision came to it more of a horror film. I think it’s a good idea. I want to see it released. I’m hopeful that it will. I’d hate to see it thrown aside.

So just to keep all of this straight, the co-producer left the movie and is now merely hearing through the grapevine that the movie is supposed to still get a theatrical release. My head hurts and I think I might be done with THE NEW MUTANTS news and updates. How's about we just review the movie whenever it hits and just leave it at that? Sounds good to me. If the movie ever gets released, THE NEW MUTANTS will introduce

a diverse cadre of teens learning to cope with their superpowers. These new mutants find themselves held in a secret facility against their will and must battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past.

THE NEW MUTANTS is directed by Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS) from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Knate Lee based on the comic series by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt, and Lauren Shuler Donner produced the movie which stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga. As you can imagine no one on this planet Earth has any f*cking idea when THE NEW MUTANTS will be released. But, you know, we'll pass along word once we hear anything. As always.
